... on using real furs/pelts/animal products/etc. to make doll items?

I'm thinking of making a fur coat for the girls, with real fur.

Well, Im a vegetarian, and not for health reasons. So yah, I'm against it. But just because I feel that way doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. By the way, does anyone know if Kaya's products are all simulations of animal products? I noticed for some of them it stated "Animal products are simulated unless otherwise noted." Does that mean if nothing is noted it's synthetic?

I don't think it is a good idea.

Well, you asked for my feelings, not what you "should" or "shouldn't" do. I would never do it myself (though I'm not a vegetarian so I certainly can't throw stones). But I can see where it might be interesting to make an actual fur coat for one of your dolls that would have worn fur in the time period she is from. Especially Kaya, since furs are such a big part of who she is. Something made of rabbit fur would probably be appropriate.

But I would never EVER use fur for a Today girl, myself. Fur used to be commonplace, but now, you're making a statement about your wealth by wearing a fur coat, and I don't think it's appropriate for any little girl to wear one nowadays, at least not in this country.

(And judging from your siggy, since you're contemplating a "real" fur coat, I REALLY hope you don't make any "real" Girl Scout cookies for your girls. )

Being a GA girl at heart, and a fan of venison, I think that if you could get a hold of deerskin from a deer that was killed for it's meat that it would be okay since the skin would be thrown away by the processer (and hunting season is just around the corner).
Real fur is a touchy subject for some, but since it is for your own use, I think it is completly up to you.

I wouldn't, but that's because I don't care for fur. (My aunt bought my one for Xmas one year and I cried for a week until my mom gave it away).

But, If that's something that you like than go ahead. We all have our own tastes.

I personally would not- Not even going into the deeper stuff, real fur can be a source of diseases and parasites. It is also likely to lure animals and pests to your doll...

Personally, I wouldn't--not because I'm against it, but simply because of the fact that I have discovered first-hand that bugs LOVE fur. Some bugs even like to eat it. I have no idea what kind, but I used to have a rabbit fur thingy that was given to me by my grandpap when I was really little and I had it for several years. And guess what. It always had bugs in it and then, some kinda bug ATE it!!! Yes it was a bug--there were little bug holes all through it, and you could definitely tell that bugs had made some sorta meal out of it. It looked like worms ate it or something. Anyways, I would just be careful, especially if it is deerskin or something. But you can get fur at craft stores I think that LOOKS very real. It even feels real, but it isn't. I would lean more towards that. Forgive me if I'm rambling on...

( oops, edited for spelling errors)

I am into animal rights, but am not a vegitarian. I have a hard time thinking about killing an animal only for its hide, and not using the meet also. That might be why I don't mind leather but do mind most furs.

That said, it is really up to you. I think it would be difficult to sew real fur, and if you've already spent a pretty penny on it, you'd hate to have it not turn out perfect.

Good luck on your decision.

Would it be possible to find high-quality faux fur?
